The Last Word

I just heard a story from my American Literature professor. She was living in Germany. There was graffiti on the wall. Everyone who passed by was looking at it because Germany is so clean and rarely has graffiti. In fact, it was cleaned up and painted over that same day.

The graffiti quoted, "God is dead. -Nietzsche"

The next day in the same spot someone spray-painted, "Nietzsche is dead. -God"

The story struck me as funny or ironic. I'm studying modernism and expressionism. Philosophers at this time were trying to break free from social constraints and some include religion as a constraint. But they cut themselves off from the divine.

How do we really break free from constraints and pressures and limitations? By the hand of God.
